End of Winter League season 19/20

Well I flew in to Spain on Monday on a plane with 14 passengers. It was a pity there was nothing to do but pick up the dog and turn on the heating. No bowling and no bars open. So our season is over and I am telling you all that we put in a great effort and should be proud of ourselves. With one away game and two home games to play we finished sixth in the league. That is one higher than last year. Thanks are due to those bowlers who stepped in for games when we needed them and I really appreciated their contributions.

Our Berleen team had a good run and ended the season in third place, on equal points with the top two. If we had found some members to play on the one week when we couldn’t put out a team we would have won the Berleen League. But life goes on and we need to be all looking after ourselves and our loved ones.

I will be in my house for next week but would be pleased to here any news from anyone. All the very best to you. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to be your captain.

Winter League report 11th March

Another home game on another sunny day but the opposition was tougher than last week. We were ahead on 3 rinks after 10 ends and the prospects were looking good. But ,unlike last week when we finished strongly, this time we weren’t quite as good.

On rink 2 Dudley’s team had a steady start and playing well to get to 13-10 after 15 ends. They lost the last three ends to loose 13-17.Not much between the two sides really.

Bob Cockell’s team had a change from last week because Barbara Flynn fell ill just before the game. Rebecca stepping into the breach. In the first half of the game they scored one point but got a 5 on end 10. They tried hard to keep in contention but could not produce another big score and went down 10-20.

On rink four Clive’s team had a well contested first half and were 10-8 after ten ends. They managed to keep their noses in front , winning six of the last eight ends.  19- 15 was our only win of the day. It was a team effort all the way.

On rink five Derek’s team started well and were 10-7 at halfway. Bonalba then got the pace of the rink and won six of the last 9 ends to earn a draw 17-17. There was some good bowling from both teams.

On rink six Mary’s team recovered from loosing five shots on the first two ends and were just 8-11 after ten ends and 11-11 after eleven. The opposition fought back to win five of the last seven ends and take the game 13-16.Another very close encounter.

So it was a hard earned 3 points for us and 9 for Bonalba. Shot difference was 72-85. Next week we travel to Vistabella but no Berleen again.

Winter League report home v Greenland’s

Well, what a day. It was a bit like a ride on The Big One at Blackpool pleasure beach! Three of the rink results were decided on the last end and all in our favour. After a long hard and eventful morning we gained 10 points to Greenland’s 2. Well done everyone and that includes the opposition who gave us such a great game.

On rink two Derek’s team started slowly but once they got going they caught the opposition and were 7-7 at halfway. From then on they won 7 of the last nine ends and had the best win on the day 19-10.

On rink three the captains team were ahead for the first half, 9-7 and playing well. We then found the opposition fighting back and putting up long jacks to make it 11-15 after fifteen ends. Going into the last end we were 12-16 down. We all bowled on top form again and managed a 5 to take the game 17-16 after a measure for fifth wood.

On Mary’s rinkthe game was close and was 9-8 after ten ends.  Then followed several single scoring ends until it was 12-12 on the seventeenth end and all to play for. Our team played well and scored three on the last end to win 15-12.

On Bob Bailey’s rink we started well and it was 14-8 at halfway. But Greenland’s scored a single and a 5 to make it 14-14. After more tight ends it was 18-18 after 17 ends. Bob’s team dug in and got one to win on the last end.

Bob Cockell was on rink eight and it was 8-11 at halfway. Our team remained in contention till the last end with the score 15-17 after 17 ends. But there was no happy ending and it was 15-18 at the finish.

On rink five our Berleen skip Alan Guest had a good start and were 11-4 up at halfway. They then won four of the last 9 ends to win 20-11. Another win for our Berleen. Great result.

Well that was a shot difference of 11 to us. Just what we needed at this stage in the season. That makes us sixth in the Winter League and third in the Berleen on shot difference. Keep it up.

Winter League report 19th February 2020

Our home game against top of the league Javea was always going to be tough and so it was against all their top players. As the game progressed we were ahead at halfway on three rinks and down on two. Unfortunately on the captains rink things turned against us in the second half and we struggled to score points in spite of some good shots. So it was a 14-17 loss.

On rink two Mary’s team played well to get ahead 9-4 at halfway. They then won 4 of the last eight ends to pull off an excellent victory 16-13.

On rink four Derek’s team were up against an in form Chris Evans and were 4-22 down after ten ends. They managed to win a couple of ends after that but it was not their day.

On rink six Bob Cockell’s team had a very slow start and were 1-15 after ten ends. But they fought back well winning six of the last eight ends and cut the difference to 12-17. Great effort.

On rink eight Bob Bailey’s team started like a house on fire and were 16-1 up at halfway. They continued their good work and won 22-10. Another two points well earned.

Our Berleen team again led by Graham Spurrier were 5-9 at halfway. In an exciting game they were 11-14 after sixteen ends but won the final two ends to win by one point 15-14. Great result.

So it was 4 points for us and 8 to Javea and a shot difference of 73-96.

Now it’s time to move on and pick up some good points next week at La Siesta.

Clive

Winter League report 5th February

Today we produced our best performance of the season and it was great to see. We won on 4 rinks and drew on one. That’s 11 points for us ad 1 for La Marina

Derek Mawson’s team had a wonderful start with 6 on the first end followed by a 2. At halfway they were 10-6 up and continued to keep their noses ahead until the final end, 17-13.

On rink five Bob Cockell had dragged himself from his sickbed to ensure we had a strong side out today. They won the first four ends and led 15-5 at halfway. That was the best start of the day. The final 8 ends saw them win 5 of them and go on to a tremendous 26-16 win.

Brian’s team started steadily but were 6-7 behind at halfway. But then they won six ends in a row, lost three but won the last end to finish 17-11. Great result for Brian’s last game of the season.

Viv Erridge’s team had a very close game and were 8-8 all at halfway. They then won four of the next five ends and the final two ends to win 21-12. What a good strong finish.

Clive’s team had a good startbeing 10-1 up after four ends The opponents then woke up to the pace of the green and, being very experienced bowlers, soon pulled back the deficit to be 13-13 after 10 ends and were 18-15 up after 14 ends. The last 4 ends were very tense but we managed to win three of them and with a double on the last end got a draw which made both teams happy.

Well done everyone including the bar and catering girls.

Cheers, Clive

Winter league report 11th December – BBC AWAY TO San Miguel

We all set off on our spacious coach to play our last game of 2019 in good spirits and arrived at SAN Miguel on time. It’s never easy getting points there but we were going to give it our best shot.

On rink 1 Brian Doggets team started well enough but then became becalmed on 3 and were 3-12 down at halfway. They fought back and were just 13- 18 after 16 ends. It looked like there was to be an exciting finish but they lost the last two ends to come second 13-21.
Just remember to give them a really hard time when the play on our green.

On rink 3 Mary’s team were involved in a hard battle and were 8-8 after ten ends. Then the opposition came back at them and it was 9-14 after 15 ends. But we fought back to be one shot ahead after 17. In a totally  bsorbing last end SAN Miguel scored a shot with a wood touching the jack. 15-15 draw. A point well earned.

On rink 4 Bob Cockell’s team had a slow start and got to 4-11 at halfway. They then won four of the last nine ends and could not make up the leeway by the end. They did keep close at 11-17 so well done.

On rink 5 Jeff Richards made a welcome return to our side and with the very able help of Derek Mawson, Lynn Avey and Joyce Pope romped away to a good lead of 15-2 at halfway and never eased off the gas until the 18th end. A great 26-9 victory and two points for Benitachell.

On rink 6 the Captains team struggled against the captain of SAN Miguel, Fred Willshire. As end rinks often are it was difficult to read and also they now have converted to 6 rinks instead of 7. It was 2-14 before any of us started to find the line and length. A small rally took place and we won 5 of the last 8 ends. At the end it was 9-22 so not a disaster in the history of games at SAN Miguel.

The last game to finish was the Berleen on rink 2. Alan Guests team played wonderfully and were 11-7 up at halfway. But the opposition came back at them and it was 15-15 after sixteen ends. In a tense finish they scored 2 on the penultimate end and dropped only 1 on the last end to pull off a good win 17-16 and we all applauded!

The game could have been easier if we had not changed to red stickers because SAN Miguel have red also! The old blue ones were much more recognisable.

So we managed 3 points to their 9 but last time we played them we lost 0-12, so this was a very good result. Roll on 2020.

Have a very happy Christmas and a prosperous new year.

Next game is January 8th at El CID and another on January 9th at home because it has been rearranged due to rain . Keep on smiling.

Winter league report 27th November – BBC AWAY TO BONALBA

The weather was set fair as we cruised down the A7 to Bonalba.

The match started well for us with, after 5 ends, one team up, one down and the others level.

Our best team was lead by Mary Cockell. They all played well and efficiently worked their way to a 20-4 victory. It was great to see.

On rink 6 Derek’s team were also playing well and were 9-8 up after ten ends. They then won the next three ends, picking up 8 shots and 17-8 ahead. Keeping it tight till the end produced a good 19-11 win. Another two points.

Brian Doggetts team had steady start but were 8-10 at halfway. The last 9 ends were touch and go with very little between the teams. It all came down to a close measure on he last end, which Bonalba just made to win by the slimmest of margins.

By now conditions had worsened with a strong wind gusting up the valley and woods being blown across the green.

On rink 8 Bob Cockell and his team were bowling well in the difficult conditions and built up a lead 10-5 at halfway and 12-5 after ten ends. The opposition then came back at them and won five ends in a row, winning 12-15. That was the turning point in the game and it ended 13-19. Better luck next time.

On rink 5 the captains team could not get to grips with the conditions and bowled like beginners for six ends, 0-14 down! They then started to win some shots but could not catch up. With a lot of effort they reduced the deficit to amore respectable 13-22.

Overall it was a good day for BBC as we managed six points including the overall shot difference 80-73. So 6-6 points was a repeat of last years result. Very well done everyone.

Next week we host Vistabella who won the league last season, but I feel confident in our ability to up our game on the day.

Keep enjoying your bowling.

Clive

Winter league report 20th November – BBC AWAY TO GREENLANDS

The sun rose on another lovely autumn day as we set off for Greenland’s.

Just before this one of our players fell over a drain cover and bruised her shoulder but bravely carried on.

On arrival we found that some of the bowlers from Vistabella had joined Greenland’s , but this happens a lot. So we were up against a very strong side.

Two of our teams had good wins, Brian Doggett & Bob Cockell. Well done boys.

Two of our teams lost in close matches and Derek’s team got walloped. Overall we got four points and shots were 72-86. We all tried our best and have nothing to be ashamed off. So just let it go.

The Berleen team played well but finally went down 15-21. They did win 10 ends!

Next match is away at Bonalba and we will go by car. Meet up at Teulada at 0900 for a 0910 start. See you all soon.

Clive

Winter League Report – 13th November – BBC HOME TO LA SIESTA

After some overnight rain the green looked good for our visitors from La Siesta.

On rink 2 Mary had a replacement for Barbara Flynn with Bert standing in. They had a very close first half and were 5 all at the turn. They went behind 5-8 but on the twelfth end started a run of six victories including a 5 and romped away to win 19-9. Great effort.

On rink 3 Clive’s team had a solid start and were soon 8-1 up. La Siesta then won control of the mat and won the next six ends! So it was 8-7 after 11 ends. It was very close right up to the last wood of the 18th end but we won 14-11.

On rink 4 Brian’s team had another close game and fought hard to be 10-10 at halfway. They were also level at the 16th but lost by one shot 17-18. Better luck next week.

On rink 5 Derek’s team scored 6 on the first end and never looked back. They all played very well winning 13 ends and finishing 33-9. The other rinks looked on in admiration.

On rink 6 Bob Cockell’s team started strongly and were 11-8 ahead at halfway and 16-10 after 12 ends. La Siesta fought back ,winning the last four ends but only one shot each time and so our team ran out 17-15 winners.

Good show all round and a well earned ten points on a day when a cloudburst forced us off the green for 15 minutes just after midday. This was a great show of teamwork. See you next week.

Winter league report – 6th November – BBC AWAY TO JAVEA GREEN

Today was our short trip to Javea Green and another local derby. Their green was in excellent condition and the weather was set for a good match.

On rink 2 Mary Cockell’s team started well but were 5-11 down at halfway. They fought back but were only getting 1s & 2s. The final score was 10-22 against a very strong team.

On rink 3 Bob Cockell’s team were marginally ahead at halfway and bowling well. But they lost five ends on the trot and were 13-21 down at the death.

Rink 4 saw Jeff’s team go 9-7 up at halfway. Once again Javea fought back and scoring 7 on the last two ends, won 13-19.

On rink 5 Clive’s team set off with gritty determination and were 11-5 ahead at halfway. Clive English’s team then won six of the last 9 ends but the captains team clung on for a 18-13 victory.

On rink 6 Brian’s team started very well and were 11-6 up at halfway.Their game then followed the pattern of most other rinks and they managed 2 shots in the second half . Final score 13-20.

Our Berleen team enjoyed their time on rink 1 getting to 18-2 after 9 ends. They all continued to play well and won 29-10. Two well earned points.
Well done. Have a rest next week!

It was very hard work for 2 points but at the end of the season it may make some difference.

Next week we are at home to La Siesta.

Keep smiling.

Clive

Winter league report, 30th October – BBC HOME TO QUESADA

Our second home game was played on a windless sunny day against the club just above us in the league. It turned out to be an exciting morning.

On rink 6 Bob Cockell’s team started slowly but only conceded ones and twos as they kept within reach of Quesada. It was 5-10 after ten ends. Our team then had a good run of 7 winning ends out of 8. So they earned two points, 16-13. That’s a great second half fight back.

On rink 5 Derek Mawson’s team had a good start and were 14-6 up after 9 ends. But Quesada fought back and closed the gap to 18-15 at the end. Two points well earned.

Rink 4 saw Jeff Richards skipping to replace Brian Doggett, away for one week. Our team went steadily ahead with good bowling from everyone, 14-2 at halfway. In spite of the opposing captain, Suzi Cooper giving loud encouragement to her team, Bbc ran away with a 27-11 win.

On rink 3 Mary Cockell ‘s team once again shot off to a good start, scoring several 3’s and 4’s and were 20-3 up after ten ends. Quesada then rallied and we won 23-11 at the end. Well done girls and keep up the good work.

On rink 2 your captains team again struggled against on form opponents. But we are getting used to this so we were doing ok until suddenly out of the blue we dropped a 6 and were 7-16 down after twelve ends. From then on it was just trying to get the overall 2 points won. This we did and so won the match by 10 points to 2; best result so far.

Well done everyone and let’s do it again next week at Javea…..

The Berleen team had a tough time and were 7-14 down after ten ends. They then bowled much better and won six of the last 8 ends, including a wonderful 3 on the last to take the points 20-17,wow! So that rounded off our victorious day except for a lovely lunch which we all enjoyed.

Thanks Petra and your girls.

Clive

Winter League report 23rd Oct 2019 – BBC away to La Marina

Today we set off to La Marina on a cold cloudy morning. After a hot cup of coffee in their clubhouse we were ready to go on a green very wet from yesterday’s rain which was much heavier than ours.

On rink 2 the captains team had a slow start but limited the opposition to 1 shot per end and were 2-8 down at halfway. They then fought back to be 10-9 up after 13 ends. On the last end our boys were holding 3 shots, but the La Marina 3rd came in with another good shot and moved the jack back to near the ditch, holding shot. So it was 12-15 at the end.

Brian Dogget’s team played very well on rink 3 and were 15-4 up at halfway. The opposition fought back but our team held on for a magnificent victory 23-13.

On rink 4 Derek Mawson’s team started very well and were 6-1 up in no time at all. Unfortunately they then dropped a 5 and three 1s to be 7-9 at halfway. They then won 3 ends out of the last 9 and lost 12-18 in a tight match. Better luck next time. You were up against a very good skip.

On rink 5 Bob Cockell’s team had a solid start and were 7-3 up at halfway. La Marina then fought back to go 10-8 up after 14 ends. In a very tense closing 4 ends our team went behind and then went ahead with a couple on the last end. Great finnish , winning 12-11.

Mary Cockell’s team on rink 6 played well throughout and were never behind. They must be very proud of their 25-6 victory.

So for the first time in a few years BBC won a game 8-4 at La Marina.

Also a good shot difference 84-63. Well done everyone.

Clive

Winter Report 16th October – BBC Home to Emerald Isle

Today was our first home game and everyone was up for a tough one against the team at the top of the league. Maurice Flynn had dropped out, unfit, so Lynn Stothard had her first game of the season.

On rink 1 Brian Doggett’s team had a very tough time and were 12-1 down after eight ends. They fought back strongly but could not make up the deficit and lost 15-24.

On rink 2 Derek Mawson’s team had a valiant battle but were always a few shots behind in a low scoring game. They won 9 ends but never scored more than 2 each time, so went down 11-14; great effort.

On rink 3 Mary Cockell’s team scored well from the second end and with a run of 6 winning ends, drew ahead 16-4 after eleven ends. The Emerald Isle team then woke up and won five of the next seven ends. A nail biting finish saw Mary win 19-17.

Rink 4 saw the captains team starting slowly and generally out of form. They were 5-10 after 10 ends. Some improvements in the later stages bore some fruit but not enough to win. A game best forgotten.

On rink 6 Bob Cockell team romped ahead with some great bowling, especially from the front end and led 18-1 at halfway. The good bowling continued and a well earned two points was their reward, 27-7. That shot difference was the main reason for us picking up the 2 points for overall, 85-80. What a cracking match it was and both captains were please with 6 points each.

The Berleen played on rink 6 and after initially falling behind fought back well to be 13-13 after eleven ends. This was followed by an unlucky 3 and 5 down and a late fight by our girls but it ended 18-22. Better luck next time.

So we have to make improvements but are still doing well. Next stop La Marina in a week.

Captain C.

Winter league report 9th Oct 2019 – BBC away to Montemar

Our trip to Montemar started well with traffic free roads and lovely weather.

On rink 1 our team started on the wrong foot and were 11-1 down after 8 ends. Then they got in the game and very nearly pulled off a surprise win, loosing 14-16. Well done Joyce, Lynne, Richard and Derek.

On rink 2 Trevor, John, Bert and Clive had a very steady start and it was 11-2 after 11 ends. Montemar then fought back and there were some sticky moments before our team won 16-10.

On rink 4 our team shot ahead to 10-5 at halfway but slumped to 10-12 just three ends later. There was then a close battle to win the points but our boys could not quite pull it off, loosing 14-16. A close call for Dave Boutell, Malcolm Sprawson, Richard Chamberlain & Bob Cockell.

On rink 5 Feli, Maurice Flynn, Bob B & Brian D. shot off to a very good start to be 16-2 up at halfway. They played superbly throughout their game and won 25-10.

On rink 6 Christine,Barbara Flynn, Viv and Mary had to battle hard to get a 13-10 lead at halfway. They then won 6 of the last 9 ends to finnish very worthy winners. Well done in spite of the heat and intense sun.

That was another good result away from home and should make us all feel proud of our club.

Next week we are at home to Emereld Isle.

Captain C.

Winter League report for 2nd October 2019 – BBC away to San Luis

The full team including Berleen set off to Torrevieja on a sunny morning in good spirits to kick off our season. We arrived at SAN Luis in good time and the rinks looked good. The game was hard fought and we had some success in spite of the fairly hot conditions.

On rink 1 your captains team had a terrible start and were down 3-13 after 10 ends! We then got a grip of the rink and won 5 of the last 8 ends. Finally it was 10-18 against a very strong team, with very tight ends till the last.

On rink 2 Feli, Chris Williamson, Bob Bailey and Brian started well but then dropped a 5 to make it 8-11 at halfway. Then they went ahead and looked good for a victory with a 13-12lead at end twelve. But they lost their way and only scored 1in the last five ends, loosing 14-25.

Rink 4 saw Sheila,Dave B, Richard Chamberlain and Bob Cockell do battle with the SAN Luis captains team. At halfway they were down 7-11 and needed to step up their game but it wasn’t their day and they were 10-22 at the end.

On rink 3 Christine Mawson, Rebecca, Viv Erridge and Mary Cockell had a game of two halves. They won the first half 17-6 and in a very dramatic second half scored a 3 and then lost the next 8 ends to see the opposition snatch a draw, 20-20.

On rink 6 Joyce, Lynne, Richard Gardiner and Derek had a mighty tussle and had a lead after 8 ends but unfortunately dropped an 8 on the next end! They were 14-17 down after 15 ends but in a wonderful fight back scored 6 in three ends to win 20-17.

So it was 3 points to Bbc and 9 to SAN Luis, well worth the struggle as on our last visit we scored 2.

Our Berleen team battled for three hours but finished poorly and were beaten 9-27.

Another away game next week at Montemar.
